Born October 7, 1952, in Leningrad
Graduated from the law faculty of Leningrad State University in 1975. In the late 1970s and early 1980s studied at KGB School No. 1 in Moscow.
1985-1990: worked in East Germany at the local intelligence office.
1990-1996: the assistant to the rector of Leningrad State University in charge of international relations.
1991: began work as Chairman of the Committee for International Relations at the St Petersburg City Hall, and from 1994 concurrently held the position of Deputy Chairman of the St Petersburg City Government.
1996-1997: Deputy Chief of the Presidential Property Management Directorate.
1997-1998: Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office and Chief of Main Control Directorate
1997: defended the doctoral thesis on economics at the St Petersburg State Mining Institute.
May 1998: First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office. July 1998: Director of the Federal Security Service. From March 1999 also held the position of Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
August1999: Prime Minister of the Russian Federation
December 31, 1999: became Acting President of the Russian Federation.
March 26, 2000: elected President of Russia. March 14, 2004: re-elected to a second term.
May 8, 2008: was appointed Prime Minister by presidential executive order.
