Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s negotiations with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, April 2, 2018
On April 2 this year the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali visited Russia at the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov. The heads of foreign ministries of the states are holding the fourth meeting for the last two years, which demonstrates the positive dynamics in the bilateral cooperation.
Ministers of both countries expressed their willingness to increase the political dialogue by the means of consultation mechanisms on political issues, liaison through the Foreign Ministries of two states and inter-parliamentary exchanges. They also highlighted the countries’ concurring and frequently similar approaches to key issues of the international agenda.
The parties stated that the bilateral trade reached the record level of $ 1.655 billion. The products of the military-technical industry have traditionally retained its priority position in Russian-Bangladeshi trade. In addition, Dhaka, being one of the leading importers of Russian wheat, has recently indicated its readiness to activate agricultural export deliveries to Russia.
Energy sector remains the significant area of the bilateral interaction. The Foreign Ministers noted with satisfaction the implementation of the flagship project for the construction of the first «Rooppur» nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. The ceremony of pouring the first concrete was held in November 2017, and in March 2018 the State Corporation «Rosatom», the Ministry of Science and Technology of Bangladesh and the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the implementation of the Rooppur NPP construction project.
The ministers discussed the timeline and preparations for the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, which is capable of giving a new impetus to the business cooperation between the two countries.
The two parties remained committed to expanding partnership in a variety of areas, and emphasized the effectiveness in implementing the bilateral agreements reached.
