Consultations on Rooppur NPP Construction

On 14-15 March 2017, a round of consultations was held in Dhaka on a wide range of issues related to the construction of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The Russian side was presented by Deputy Director General of State Corporation ROSATOM Nikolay Spasskiy, Deputy Chairperson of Rostechnadzor Alexey Ferapontov and Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Ignatov.

Upon mutual decision, the negotiations were focused on the preparation of an intergovernmental agreement on spent nuclear fuel management. The agreement was approved and initialed by the sides and will be prepared to be signed at the soonest.

The partners reviewed the schedule of works to be conducted at the final stage of the preparatory period and the first stage of the main period of the Rooppur NPP construction. There is a common understanding that the main task of the upcoming period is to implement "first concrete" works at Rooppur NPP-1 within the agreed time frames. To this end, a special working group was created to provide uninterrupted cooperation between the two regulators, customer and general contractor.

During the visit, Nikolay Spasskiy and Alexey Ferapontov inspected the Rooppur NPP construction site and held a working meeting there. Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority Chairman Naiyyum Choudhury, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr. Engr. Md Monzurul Haque and JSC "Atomstroyexport" chief managers took part in the meeting.

The preliminary outcomes of the work will be discussed at the next Joint Coordination Committee meeting in Moscow in June or July this year.

Following the consultations, the sides adopted a joint protocol.
